UKAA (the UK Apartment Association) has announced Nero Ughwujabo as the keynote speaker for the Annual Build to Rent Conference and Industry Awards 2022 on 15th November 2022. UKAA is the membership organisation for Build to Rent (BTR) in the UK and its must-attend London conference will bring together key players from across the industry.
Nero is currently the Senior Strategy Adviser – Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the Prince’s Trust and Prince’s Trust Group. He has previously been a Special Adviser to Prime Minister Theresa May – the first person of African descent to hold this position. Nero’s portfolio was Social Justice, Young People, and Opportunity; but extended to external relations and stakeholder engagement, with a particular focus on engaging civil society and Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.
Equality, diversity and inclusion will be a key strand at the Annual Conference, under the headline theme of the pursuit of excellence within the BTR sector.
Nero’s experience includes leading the Prime Minister’s special project, the Race Disparity Audit, which was a global first-of-its-kind audit of all public services. The unprecedented release of government data described experiences and outcomes of people of all ethnicities across public services. Many of the lessons learned from the project can be translated into practical steps for effecting real change within the BTR industry.
At the UKAA Annual Conference, Nero will focus on why there is increasing attention on equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) globally, along with the business, legal and moral case for focussed action. He will discuss how investment funds are looking at ED&I and how consumers – BTR customers – are using the power of social media to influence investment decisions.
“We are delighted that Nero will be sharing his expertise with delegates at this year’s UKAA Annual Build to Rent Conference and Industry Awards. Nero will be leading a field of talented speakers and panelists who will be exploring examples of excellence within the BTR sector. His extensive national and international experience, which spans local and national government and largescale urban regeneration work, will be invaluable in considering the importance of ED&I within the Build to Rent sector.”
Brendan Geraghty, CEO, UKAA
Nero has worked closely with national and international stakeholders and leaders, including former US President Barack Obama and the Obama Foundation. He was a guest speaker at Obama’s MBK Rising event in the US and has spoken on the issue of diversity and inclusion at the European Union, the US Congress and at the Congressional Black Caucus US.
Nero’s experience includes many years of working on regeneration matters across local government, national government and on the international stage. He was a leading member of Croydon’s Chief Executive’s group, which was responsible for regeneration in the London borough. When he left government, Ughwujabo consulted on the international programme, Future Cities, developing urban regeneration guidelines for emerging economies.
