ARL announces launch of new Co-living Committee

  • Committee will focus on thought leadership, best practice, lobbying, education and more
  • VervLife Managing Director Katherine Rose to serve as Chair
  • 25,021 co-living beds now operational or in pipeline in UK (Savills)

The ARL has announced the launch of a new Co-living Committee, chaired by VervLife Managing Director Katherine Rose. The formation of the committee cements ARL’s commitment to the full living sector, from Build to Rent and Single-Family Housing to Co-living and beyond.

According to Savills, the Co-living sector is “still nascent, but rapidly gaining momentum.” The firm’s research shows that there were 2,000 Co-living beds completed in the UK in 2022, with a total of 25,021 beds either operational or in the pipeline. Nor is the UK alone in this Co-living expansion; Savills reports that 51% of European investors plan to invest in Co-living during the coming three years – a 13% increase that represents greater growth than any other living sector.

The first meeting of the ARL Co-living Committee will take place on Friday 8th March 2024. In addition to VervLife, committee membership will include representatives from PLP Architecture, Assael, Urban Bubble, Hub Residential, JLL, The Coliving Company, Halcyon DP, Savills, DP9, BNP Paribas, and Outpost Management. The committee’s work will focus on thought leadership, best practice, lobbying, education around the co-living sector’s offering, design, and amenities, planning, and more.

“We are delighted at the strong show of support for this new committee, as the evolution of the Co-living sector in the UK picks up significant pace. Over the coming years, the Co-living sector will be expanding in many UK cities and towns, making now the ideal time to take a coordinated approach to key issues within the sector and to communication with local authorities and government.”

Katherine Rose, Chair, ARL Co-Living Committee

The Co-living Committee is one of six committees organised under the ARL umbrella. The others include the Investor and Lender Committee, Operations Committee, Suppliers Committee, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Research, Education and Policy Committee. The ARL also operates regional hubs around the country and coordinates a range of national and international events throughout the year.

The Co-living sector is a crucial component of the overarching living sector here in the UK. As the sector gathers momentum, the ARL Co-living Committee will play a key role in its future expansion, mirroring our work in the Build to Rent and other living sectors over the past several years.
